Why this is a range, not a quote
Every figure here comes from a source named on its line and listed below, checked on 15 September 2026. Fares, passes, the taxi tariff and the departure tax are official; meal prices are Numbeo's crowd-sourced Tokyo averages, not an official price list. The subway and rail passes are counted per traveller; the taxi option is shared by the group. Treat the result as a band to plan against, not a bill.

Common questions
How much does a trip to Japan cost?
It depends mostly on where you sleep and how far you ride. From the figures on this page: Numbeo's crowd-sourced Tokyo prices put a cheap meal at about ¥1,200 and a mid-range dinner for two at about ¥6,000; a Tokyo Subway Ticket is ¥1,000 for 24 hours or ¥2,000 for 72; a 7-day Japan Rail Pass is ¥50,000 on the official site. Accommodation sits on top, and we do not average it.
Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?
Only on a long route. Bought on the official site, the Ordinary pass is ¥50,000 for 7 days, ¥80,000 for 14 and ¥100,000 for 21; exchange orders from overseas agents bought from 1 October 2026 cost more, ¥53,000 for 7 days. Nozomi and Mizuho trains need an extra ticket. Price single tickets for your real route first.
What is Japan's departure tax?
The International Tourist Tax: ¥3,000 per departure since 1 July 2026, up from ¥1,000. The airline collects it with your fare, so you pay nothing at the airport. Children under 2 are exempt, and so are some transit passengers who leave within 24 hours; tickets bought before 1 July 2026 keep the old rate.
Do hotels in Japan charge a tourist tax?
Some cities do. Kyoto has charged ¥200 to ¥10,000 per person per night since 1 March 2026, depending on the room rate. Tokyo charges ¥100 per person per night on rooms from ¥10,000 to under ¥15,000 and ¥200 from ¥15,000, with nothing below ¥10,000; it has proposed changes, but no start date was published when we checked. We have not checked other cities.
How much is a taxi in Tokyo?
The Tokyo Hire-Taxi Association's tariff is ¥500 for the first 1.0 km, then ¥100 for every 232 m (211 m on the second tariff), with 20 percent more from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. From Narita, fixed fares to the Tokyo zones run from ¥23,500 to ¥38,500, plus tolls and a late-night surcharge.
Why does this calculator ask me for accommodation?
Because we have no verified hotel prices for Japan, and we are not going to invent them. Rates swing by city, season and standard, and blossom weeks in Tokyo and Kyoto cost most. Check your dates on a booking site, enter the nightly rate, and every other number here has a source.
