This is an estimate based on typical use, not a promise. Video quality, autoplay and background app refresh move it a lot. The best predictor is your own usage at home: check the data screen in your phone settings.

Data usage per activity

Rough daily figures for a typical tourist day, so you can sanity-check the estimate above.

Common questions

How much data do I need for a week in Bali?

For maps, messaging and some social media, a week lands around 4GB. We'd still point you at 10GB, our smallest plan, to be on the safe side: real weeks are rarely average, and video calls home, unreliable villa wifi or a couple of heavy days close that gap quickly. Streaming goes through it fastest, with an hour of HD video a day roughly 2.5GB on its own. Use the calculator above for a figure based on what you'll actually do.

How much data does Google Maps use?

Less than people expect for the navigation itself: turn-by-turn is roughly 5 to 10MB an hour. What adds up on holiday is everything around it, searching for places, loading listing photos and reading reviews, so budget around 75MB for a full day of getting around. Downloading an offline map of Bali over wifi before you fly cuts it a lot.

Do WhatsApp video calls use a lot of data?

Yes, more than anything else people do daily. A video call is roughly 500 to 600MB an hour, while a WhatsApp voice call is only about 15 to 30MB an hour. If you call home often, switch to voice or call over your accommodation's wifi.

Why does the estimate include a 15% buffer?

Because real usage is never exactly average. One long transit day on maps, or one unplanned video call, skews a short trip. The buffer gives you slack so you're less likely to run out mid-holiday. The result line always tells you the buffer is in there.

What happens if I run out of data in Bali?

You can buy a paid top-up to add more data or extend validity, so you're never stuck without a connection. It's still cheaper to start with the right size: our 20GB plan works out cheaper per GB than the 10GB.

Can I just use wifi in Bali instead?

Partly. Villas, hotels and cafes almost all have wifi, and it handles the heavy things like streaming well. What it doesn't cover is the moment you land, the ride to your villa, finding somewhere on maps, or a scooter trip up north. That's what the eSIM is for, and it's why the wifi toggle only cuts the estimate by 30% rather than removing it.
