eSIM not activating in Bali: the landing-day fixes

What to do when your eSIM installed fine at home but shows no service after landing in Bali, with the fixes ordered from most to least likely.

eSIM not activating in Bali: the landing-day fixes

The short answer

If your eSIM installed fine at home but shows no service after landing, it is almost always one of two settings: data roaming switched off, or your phone still using your home SIM for data. This guide covers that exact moment, the first activation on arrival. Installing and activating are separate steps by design: the plan stays dormant until the eSIM reaches the network in Indonesia, and that first handshake is where these snags live. Work through the fixes in order and you will very likely be online before your bags appear.

Fix the two big settings first

Turn data roaming on for the travel eSIM, then select it as your data line: these two settings clear most activation failures, and roaming alone is the number one cause. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular, tap the travel line, switch on Data Roaming, then set Cellular Data to that line. On Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM manager, pick the eSIM as the mobile data SIM and enable roaming for it. Roaming here creates no home-network charges: it is simply how a travel eSIM reaches Telkomsel at all.

Give the network a minute, then force it

First-time registration on a new network can take a few minutes, so wait briefly, then cycle airplane mode on and off to force a fresh search. Phones sometimes cling to the empty result of their first scan, and the airplane toggle makes them look again: it clears most of the cases the settings above did not. Still nothing after another minute? Restart the phone completely. It is slower than the airplane trick but resets the radios more thoroughly, and it is the last free fix before the manual steps below.

Select Telkomsel manually and check the APN

If the phone latched onto the wrong network or none at all, pick Telkomsel by hand. In your network settings for the travel line, switch off automatic selection and choose Telkomsel from the list that appears. While you are there, glance at the APN: iPhones set it automatically in almost every case, but on Android it is worth confirming an APN entry exists for the eSIM line. Apple describes the travel flow, including roaming and line selection, on Apple's guide to using an eSIM abroad.

Not activating, or never installed?

Check that the line actually exists: if no travel eSIM is listed in your settings at all, you have an install problem, not an activation problem. An activation problem means the line is visible and its toggles are there, but no service appears. An install problem means the line is missing entirely, and fixing it needs Wi-Fi and your QR code, which the install guides for iPhone and Samsung walk through. The reassuring part either way: a failed activation costs nothing, because your 30 days only start once the eSIM first connects.

When to email support

If you are still offline after ten minutes and every step above, stop fiddling and email support@goodbars.co with four things: the email address you ordered with, your phone model, a screenshot of your SIM settings screen, and which of these fixes you already tried. That combination lets support see the problem in one reply instead of three. And once you are connected, any later drops around the island are a different topic: coverage and mid-trip issues have their own troubleshooting guide, while this page stays focused on getting that first connection made.

Common questions

Why is my eSIM not working after landing in Bali?

Almost always because data roaming is off for the eSIM, or your phone is still using your home SIM for data. Fix those two settings first; they resolve most first-activation failures.

Do I really need data roaming on to activate?

Yes, this is the single most common cause. Roaming is simply how a travel eSIM connects to Telkomsel, and it does not create charges from your home network.

How long should activation take after landing?

Usually under a minute once the settings are right, but first-time network registration can take a few minutes. If nothing happens, cycle airplane mode to force a new network search.

Should I select Telkomsel manually?

Only if the automatic search fails. Switch off automatic network selection for the travel line, wait for the list of networks, and choose Telkomsel.

Has my 30-day validity started if activation failed?

No. The 30 days only begin when the eSIM makes its first successful connection to the network in Indonesia, so a failed attempt costs you nothing.

What should I send support if nothing works?

Email support@goodbars.co with the email address you ordered with, your phone model, a screenshot of your SIM settings, and the fixes you already tried. That gets you a useful reply in one round.

Is your phoneESIM READY?

Most phones from 2018 on support eSIM. Check yours in under a minute, then set everything up before you fly.
