Flores

Flores is the long volcanic island east of Bali. Its western tip is Labuan Bajo and the boats out to Komodo National Park; beyond that it becomes mountain roads, Catholic hill towns, the tri-coloured crater lakes of Kelimutu and villages you reach on foot. Slower, rougher travel, and that is the point.

Flores

What Flores is

Flores is a long, mountainous island in East Nusa Tenggara, and most visitors only ever see its western tip. A volcanic spine runs the length of it, so the road climbs and drops constantly between coastal towns, terraced rice fields, coffee country and cloud forest. Culturally it stands apart from Bali and Lombok: Flores is majority Roman Catholic, a legacy of Portuguese and later Dutch missionary presence, so you pass churches and roadside shrines rather than temples, and local languages change by district. Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende and Maumere are the main towns along the way, each a plausible overnight stop.

Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park

Labuan Bajo, the harbour town on the western tip, is where almost every Komodo trip starts, and for many travellers it is the whole of Flores. The park offshore covers Komodo, Rinca, Padar and the water between them, with free-ranging Komodo dragons, the Padar ridge viewpoint, Pink Beach and manta cleaning stations. Walks among the dragons are ranger-accompanied by rule, because the animals are genuinely dangerous. You choose between a day boat and a liveaboard of two nights or more, and quality across the fleet varies enormously, so weigh safety equipment, crew and recent independent reviews above the itinerary. Park charges have been raised, withdrawn and restructured repeatedly, so verify the current official rate rather than any figure quoted second hand.

The rest of the island

East of Labuan Bajo the island changes completely, and this is where Flores stops being a boat trip and becomes an overland one. Kelimutu is the headline: three crater lakes on one summit at roughly 1,600 metres that hold visibly different colours and have changed repeatedly over the years, reached before dawn from the village of Moni. Wae Rebo, a Manggarai village of cone-shaped houses at around 1,200 metres, has no road: from the trailhead at Denge it is commonly described as roughly 8 to 9 kilometres and two to three hours of steady uphill walking. Bena near Bajawa is far easier to reach if that walk is out of reach.

Getting there and the Trans-Flores highway

Fly into one end and out of the other, and treat the road between them as part of the trip rather than a transfer. Most people fly from Bali to Labuan Bajo in the west or to Maumere or Ende further east, then travel overland on the Trans-Flores highway, the single road that ties the island together. End to end it covers roughly 600 to 700 kilometres depending where you stop, but the distance understates it: narrow, winding and slow, so a driving day covers far less ground than the map suggests. The usual stages are Labuan Bajo to Ruteng, on to Bajawa, then Ende or Moni, and finally Maumere. Motion sickness is a real consideration.

When to go, and who it suits

Come in the dry season, roughly April to October, and come expecting guesthouses rather than resorts. Those months bring the calmest seas for Komodo boat days, with the peak of the season the busiest, while the wetter half brings rougher crossings, more cancellations and landslides on the mountain roads. Outside Labuan Bajo there are no beach clubs or spas, hot water is not a given, menus narrow and English is spoken unevenly. What you get instead is an island that still feels lived in rather than staged. Give it a week at minimum for an overland run, ideally ten days, and fewer stops than the map tempts you into.

Staying connected across Flores

Flores is where the limits of Indonesian mobile coverage show up honestly: the towns work, the spaces between them often do not. Goodbars runs on Telkomsel, the network with the widest reach in the country, and as of July 2026 that means workable 4G in Labuan Bajo, Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende and Maumere, enough for maps, messaging and booking the next night. On the mountain passes, at villages like Wae Rebo and out in Komodo National Park itself, plan on having no usable signal at all. No eSIM fixes remote terrain. What a working data plan does here is keep you connected at either end of each leg, which is where you actually book drivers, confirm guides and tell people you arrived.

Common questions

How do you get to Flores?

Most people fly from Bali to Labuan Bajo in the west, or to Maumere or Ende further east, then travel overland along the Trans-Flores highway. Flying into one end and out of the other avoids backtracking across the island. Ferries also connect Flores to neighbouring islands, but they are slow.

Is Flores just Komodo?

No, though many trips stop there. Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park sit on the western tip; the rest of the island is mountain roads, Catholic hill towns, the Kelimutu crater lakes and villages you reach on foot. Seeing only Komodo is a valid short trip, but it is a small slice of Flores.

How many days do you need in Flores?

A week is the practical minimum for an overland run from Labuan Bajo to Maumere, and ten days or more is more comfortable. If you only want Komodo, three or four days based in Labuan Bajo covers a boat trip and a spare day for weather.

When is the best time to visit Flores?

The dry season, roughly April to October, gives the calmest seas for Komodo boat days and the most reliable mountain roads. The wetter months bring rougher crossings, more cancellations and landslide risk inland. Kelimutu can cloud over in any season, so allow a spare morning if the lakes matter to you.

How much are Komodo National Park fees?

Check the current official rate rather than a figure from an older article. Park charges have been raised, proposed, cancelled and restructured several times, and reporting also describes a daily visitor cap and online pre-booking. Ask your operator in writing exactly what the tour price includes and verify close to your travel date.

Is there mobile signal in Flores?

In the towns, generally yes on Telkomsel, on 4G as of July 2026. Between them, often not. Mountain passes, remote villages such as Wae Rebo and Komodo National Park itself commonly have no usable signal, so download offline maps and treat connectivity as something you have in town rather than everywhere.
