Kuta Beach

Kuta is where Bali's beach tourism began in the 1930s: a long, sandy, west-facing stretch right next to the airport. Today it is honestly the busiest and most commercial of the south-coast beach towns, and it has passed its trendy peak (Seminyak took the upmarket crown, Canggu the laptop crowd). What it still does better than anywhere: cheap stays, surf lessons, sunsets and sheer energy, minutes from your arrival gate.

Kuta is one of the best beginner surf beaches anywhere, and it is structural: a soft sandy bottom instead of reef, and consistent, forgiving whitewater. The sand is lined with surf schools and board-rental stands, from soft-top foam boards for a first lesson to shortboards as you progress. If you have ever wanted to try surfing, this is the place on the island to do it.

Facing due west over the Indian Ocean, Kuta earns its old nickname of Sunset Beach. A beachfront path runs north along the sand into Legian and on towards Seminyak, with beach bars and beanbags along the way, so the classic Kuta evening is a slow walk with the sky colouring up over the water.

This is an open-ocean beach break, not a calm bay, and rip currents are a real hazard. Kuta is patrolled by Bali's Balawista lifeguards: swim between the red-and-yellow flags, and stay out of the water where a red or checkered flag is up. Hawkers work the sand persistently near the main entrances, so a polite, firm no is part of the routine.
