The short answer
On most recent Android phones the install is short: open Settings, find the SIM or network section, tap Add eSIM (or Download a SIM), and scan the QR code from your order email while on Wi-Fi. The exact wording changes from brand to brand, which is the only real wrinkle. Do it at home before you fly, because installing changes nothing yet: the eSIM stays idle until it first connects to the network after you land, and no plan data is used during setup.
Does your Android phone support eSIM
Most flagship and many mid-range Android phones from about 2019 on support eSIM, but it is not universal, so check yours first. Recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z and FE models, Google Pixels, and current Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus, Motorola and Google-services Huawei phones generally carry it. Two honest caveats: many budget, older or region-locked Android phones have no eSIM hardware at all, and a carrier-locked phone can block another network's eSIM until your provider unlocks it. The fast test: dial *#06# and look for an EID number. If one appears, the hardware is there.
Finding the eSIM menu
The menu name varies by maker, so the reliable move is to search your Settings for eSIM. Common paths are Settings > Network & internet > SIMs (Pixel and stock Android), Settings > Connections > SIM manager (Samsung), and Settings > SIM & network or Mobile network (Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus and others). Look for a button labelled Add eSIM, Download a SIM, or Add mobile plan. If none of those appear anywhere in the SIM settings, the phone most likely has no eSIM hardware, or it is carrier-locked.
Scan the QR or enter it manually
Connect to Wi-Fi first, then scan the QR code from your Goodbars order email, or enter the details by hand if scanning fails. The phone downloads the eSIM profile over the internet, which is why home Wi-Fi beats improvising at the airport. Show the QR on a laptop or a second screen, since a phone cannot scan a code on its own display. If the camera will not read it, choose Enter manually and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from that same email. Give the eSIM a clear name like Travel when asked.
Set the data line and roaming
Once installed, set the eSIM as your mobile data line, and turn Data Roaming on for it after you land in Indonesia. Roaming sounds like a bill risk, but for a travel eSIM it is just how the line reaches the local network, and it cannot touch your home plan. Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts on your usual number, and leave its mobile data off so no home-network charge is possible. The travel eSIM is data-only, so both lines work side by side.
Check before you fly
A quick check at home the day before saves stress at the airport. Confirm:
- The eSIM appears in your SIM settings with its own entry.
- You know where the mobile data selector is, so switching lines on landing is quick.
- You have found the Data Roaming toggle for the travel line.
- The order email is saved offline, in case you need the QR or manual details again.
None of this starts your validity: the clock only runs from the first connection in Indonesia.
