Why half the island's rooms are on one headland
Most Bali guides have a thousand hotels in them, because most Bali guides earn a commission when you book one. This one holds 43 in total, and 22 of those are on this single limestone headland.
That is not a scoring accident. Uluwatu is the one part of the island where the room is the reason for the trip rather than the place you leave in the morning. The peninsula's 129 entries include 66 restaurants; Canggu has 114 in a stretch you can ride end to end in ten minutes. You are not coming here to eat out.
It is three places, not one
Google files the peninsula's 129 entries under three names, Uluwatu, Pecatu and Ungasan, and the drive from the north end to the cliffs is forty minutes of bad road.
The clifftop resorts have almost nothing to do with the surf shacks above Bingin, and picking the wrong one is not a small mistake in a week. Ungasan is worth naming and then ruling out: 22 places in the guide and 0 of them somewhere to sleep.
Which end to pick
Stay near Bingin or Padang Padang if you want to walk to the water and eat somewhere different every night.
Stay out towards Pecatu if the pool and the view are the point. The drive is long, the food options thin, and that is precisely the trade you are making. Neither is wrong. Choosing without knowing there was a choice is what goes wrong.
What a week here actually looks like
The peninsula holds 66 restaurants across its 129 entries, and they are spread over a headland that takes forty minutes to cross. In practice that means most dinners happen where you are staying, or a twenty-minute ride from it, and the second option involves an unlit road each way.
This is not a complaint about Uluwatu. It is the trade the place is built on: fewer options, better rooms, and a view that is genuinely the point rather than a photograph of one. But it does mean the choice of where to sleep carries more weight here than anywhere else on the island, because it also decides where you eat, how far you ride at night, and whether the beach is a walk or a drive.
One honest caveat about the numbers
20 of the 22 carry no review count at all, so the rating, running from 4 to 5, is doing all of the work. A rating without a volume behind it is a much softer fact than it looks. Use this to shortlist, not to decide.
Booking here is also the one part of a Bali trip that genuinely happens before you arrive, on a laptop, weeks out. The connection you want on the ground is for the forty minutes of bad road afterwards.
