Uluwatu

Uluwatu occupies the south-western tip of the Bukit peninsula, a high limestone plateau that ends in dramatic sea cliffs above the Indian Ocean. It is known for world-class surf, clifftop views, hidden white-sand coves reached by steep staircases, and a wilder, more adventurous feel than the developed hubs to the north. It suits surfers, couples after clifftop privacy, and sunset chasers more than families with very young children, since many of the marquee beaches have steep access and strong currents.

The Bukit is spread out, with distinct spots along the cliffs:

• Uluwatu and Pecatu hold the clifftop temple, the famous reef break and much of the resort-and-dining scene.
• Padang Padang is a small, famous cove with a renowned wave.
• Bingin is a boho clifftop spot above a photogenic low-tide beach.
• Dreamland and Balangan are larger, gentler beaches.
• Nearby Nusa Dua is a separate, calm, gated-resort enclave, quite different in character.

Uluwatu is roughly 18 to 25 kilometres from Ngurah Rai airport (DPS), about 40 to 60 minutes by car and up to an hour and a half in heavy late-afternoon traffic. A pre-booked private transfer is the usual way in. On the Bukit itself a scooter is the typical way to get around, since spots are separated and little is walkable. Gojek and Grab work here but are pricier and slower than up north, and pickups are restricted at some popular spots like the temple and Padang Padang, so a live map and data really help.

Uluwatu is genuinely a dry-season destination. The window from roughly April to October brings sunnier, lower-humidity days and the best surf, with July and August the busiest. The wet season, about November to March, is greener, quieter and cheaper but wetter. If surf or clifftop sunsets are your reason for coming, aim for the dry months.
