How long arrival at DPS really takes
Plan on 60 to 90 minutes from touchdown to sitting in a car at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), and up to two and a half hours in a bad wave. All of Bali's international flights land at this one terminal, so your queue depends on who lands with you: as of July 2026 the roughest windows are roughly 10:00 to 14:00 and 22:00 to 02:00, when several widebodies arrive together, and July, August, December and January are the busiest months. A quiet early-morning landing can clear in 30 to 45 minutes.
Immigration: e-VOA and the autogates
Buy the e-VOA online before you fly: it costs the same 500,000 IDR (roughly €28) as the visa-on-arrival counter and lets you use the biometric autogates instead of the manual line. The autogate takes seconds once your passport scans; the manual counter runs 30 to 90 minutes at peak, as of July 2026. Two more things to sort before boarding: the free All Indonesia arrival card (allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id, filled in within three days of arrival) and the 150,000 IDR Bali tourist levy on the official Love Bali site.
Customs, the e-CD QR and baggage
There is no paper customs form anymore: the All Indonesia arrival card includes the electronic customs declaration, and officers scan its QR code as you leave baggage claim. Save the QR offline before you fly, because you cannot count on being connected when you need it. Baggage is the wildcard: bags sometimes beat you through immigration, and sometimes add another 20 to 30 minutes to the whole process. Trolleys are free.
Cash at arrivals: ATMs beat the changers
Use a bank-branded ATM in arrivals rather than the airport money changers, whose rates are noticeably worse than in town. BCA, Mandiri and BNI machines are the safe picks, and you only need enough rupiah for the first day or two, since cards and QR payments are widely accepted. Change larger amounts later at a licensed money changer in town (look for posted rates and the PT company prefix, such as BMC or Central Kuta) and skip any kiosk advertising a rate that looks too good.
Getting out: the taxi counter vs Grab
Your two clean options are the official taxi counter in the arrivals hall, with fixed fares of roughly 150,000 to 450,000 IDR by zone, and Grab or Gojek from their designated airport pickup points. The counter charges above street price with no haggling: that premium is the airport transport monopoly at work, and after a long flight it is often easier to accept than to fight. Ride-hailing cars cannot stop at the curb, so follow the Grab or Gojek signs to their lounges and expect an airport surcharge on the fare, as of July 2026. Ignore anyone calling "taxi, taxi" at you inside the hall.
Data on landing: SIM counters vs eSIM
The SIM counters in arrivals work fine, but you pay airport prices: tourist packages run roughly 250,000 to 1,250,000 IDR as of July 2026, well above town or online rates, and registration means another queue with your passport out. The simpler route is installing an eSIM at home before you fly and switching it on when the wheels touch down.
