Selong Belanak Beach

On the map
There is 4G along the south Lombok coast and at the bay, with no 5G as of July 2026. Save an offline map before you drive out, because the hill road loses signal in dips.
What Selong Belanak is
Selong Belanak is a long white crescent west of Kuta Lombok, and it is the bay most people on the island learn to surf in. The sand runs in one unbroken arc between two green headlands, the water shelves out gently, and the bottom is sand rather than reef across the stretch where everyone swims and paddles. The bay is wide enough that beginners, swimmers and the fishing boats pulled up at one end all fit without getting in each other's way.
Why beginners learn to surf here
The waves at Selong Belanak are slow, crumbly and break over sand in water you can stand up in, which is the combination a first surf lesson needs. There is no shallow reef under the learner zone, so a fall costs you a mouthful of seawater rather than a cut, and the long gentle shelf gives you time to get to your feet before the wave runs out. Boards and lessons are easy to arrange from the shacks behind the sand. Once you can stand, the bay stops being interesting fairly quickly and people move east along the coast.
Swimming and conditions
It is a good swimming beach on most days, for the same reasons it is a good learner beach: shallow, sandy and sheltered by the headlands at either end. Conditions still change with swell and tide. Bigger swell pushes surf further into the bay, the water gets churned and murky after rain, and current runs harder near the headlands than it does in the middle. There are no lifeguards here, so treat it as an unsupervised beach, keep an eye on where you have drifted, and stay out of the boat channels at the eastern end.
Getting there from Kuta Lombok
Selong Belanak is roughly thirty to forty five minutes west of Kuta Lombok by road, and the last stretch is a steep hill descent down to the bay. Most people ride a scooter or hire a driver for the day; there is no public transport worth waiting for. The road has improved in recent years but still has broken edges, blind bends and steep gradients, and it is not the place to ride a scooter for the first time. There is a viewpoint on the way down over the whole arc of the beach. Parking areas sit behind the sand and a small charge is usually collected on the spot, so carry small cash.
When to go and what to bring
Mornings are the best of it: the water is cleanest, the wind has not picked up, and the learner crowd thins out. The dry season, broadly May to September, brings the most reliable conditions and the clearest water. Shade is limited to whatever the trees and umbrellas along the back of the sand give you, so bring sun protection, a rash vest for time in the water and more drinking water than you think you need. Cattle are sometimes driven along the beach in the late afternoon, which surprises people and is entirely normal here.
Phone signal at Selong Belanak
Coverage is workable: 4G along the south Lombok coast and at the bay, with no 5G as of July 2026. Goodbars runs on Telkomsel, which reaches further across Lombok than any other Indonesian network, so maps, messaging and calling a driver all work from the sand and on the road out from Kuta. Signal is thinnest in the dips on the hill road and behind the headlands at either end of the bay. Save the route offline before you leave town anyway: the turns inland are unsigned, and a missed one out here costs you a long backtrack.
